I decided in early November to part exchange my trusty Nikon D750 for a shiny new Nikon Z7 ii, and off it went to Wex. I was hoping at the time of parting that the Z7 ii, and 24-70mm f/4 lens would ship at the end of November, but as it transpired that was optimistic, and it wasn’t until the 12th December that I got my early Christmas present. Sadly, it was the 20th of December before I managed to get out, and about. The weather in-between had been horrendous, and if I’m honest the 20th was only marginally better.

We’re still in tier 3 lockdown here, so in the spirit of government guidance I stayed local to Staffordshire. My plan was to shoot Ramshaw Rocks at sunrise, but as I pulled off the main road to the layby there were plenty of cars already there, so I decided to head to Gib Torr, which I was pretty much guaranteed to have all to myself.

The bonus of staying with the Nikon brand was that whilst there were a few new whistles, and bells to get used to, by and large the menu system was the same, so the basic operation of the Z7 ii wasn’t an issue.

Given the conditions (rain showers and a stiff breeze) I have to say I’m impressed with the high res images from the Z7 ii, although the laptop is labouring a bit whilst it processes them. What a dilemma. A new laptop, or a Z 70-200mm f/2.8? Decisions, decisions . . .
