Hen Cloud & Heather
A landscape photography blog by Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire based landscape photographer Rob Thorley Photography.
After the disappointment of the last couple of outings it was nice to get a win.
It was late August, and with the heather still in full bloom I headed up to The Roaches in the Peak District. For a change I went up Hen Cloud having decided to shoot the end profile of The Roaches using the heather for the foreground interest.
I arrived around half past one in the afternoon. It was a gorgeous day warm and sunny with a pleasing blue sky interspersed with enough cloud, so that the sky wasn’t too boring.
I hadn’t gone far before this scene offered itself. I often find that bagging an early shot that I’m happy with sets the tone for a good day.
After getting the first image I continued to head up Hen Cloud and basically photographed the end profile from the stages of the climb.
I didn’t stay too long when I got to the summit of Hen Cloud as the midges were swarming making it a little unpleasant to sit around. Heading back down I continued as I started and just stuck with the plan. What was nice this afternoon was that the contrails in the sky generally helped, or at least I think they helped with the composition. Usually I seem to get them at odd angles, and find them distracting, but not today.
I got back down from Hen Cloud around 5pm with plenty of images that I was pleased with. With sunset quite a way off and too much midge action I decided to call it a day and headed off home.
